EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR EGTS
The exhaust gas temperature sensor, EGTS, measures the temperature in the vehicle’s exhaust system. The sensor element changes resistance when the temperature changes. The ECU measures this resistance and calculates the actual exhaust temperature. This function protects the engine and exhaust components from overheating.
LOCATION
The upstream oxygen sensor is located above the catalytic converter and the downstream oxygen sensor is located behind.
COMMON FAULT SYMPTOMS
- Changes in the resistance of the sensor element due to exposure to excessively high temperatures
- Damage to internal cables due to excessive vibration
- Exposure of cables to other contaminants or fluids such as oil or antifreeze
FAULT EFFECTS
- Dashboard light on for particulate filter or engine
- Unnecessary regeneration of the particulate filter
- Increased oil consumption
- Increased CO (carbon monoxide), NOX (nitrogen oxides), and HC (unburned hydrocarbons) emission levels
- Altered engine performance due to the anomaly raised by the sensor failure
